The outdoors does wonders for mental health and keeping active. Studies show that spending time outside can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting mood and creativity. Third places such as parks, cafes, and community spots, are also vital for our social health. They provide a welcoming environment where we can gather, interact, and build connections outside of home and work. This sense of community fosters feelings of belonging and support, which are essential for our well-being. Jesmond Dene, in Newcastle Upon Tyne is my favourite third place, a go to spot for connecting with nature and clearing my mind, while finding inspiration at the same time. No matter how many times I visit, there’s always a new nook to explore. Jesmond Dene Road, which runs above the dene is a charming lane lined with trees and a few cottages/bungalows; on the opposite side of the dene, a hill leads toward Paddy Freeman’s Park where upon reaching the top you’re rewarded with views of the whole dene above the trees. The sound of the waterfall and river creates an incredibly peaceful atmosphere and a place where I could easily sit and listen for hours.
I like to visit early in the morning when the sun rises, peeking through the trees and glistening off the water. Sometimes, the stillness of the water is so tranquil that I can see the mist hovering above it, creating a beautiful scene that I never get tired of. The morning dog walkers and joggers who say hello bring a nice sense of community to the busy city. It’s nice to share a moment with others who also appreciate the outdoors.
I often enjoy Jesmond Dene with my friends; we walk or run together, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. Spending time in nature not only allows for physical activity but it can foster mindfulness and reflection, which often helps clear the clutter from my mind. I sometimes pop into Jesmond for a coffee from LOCAL before or after my trip to the dene; it’s one of the best coffee spots in Newcastle. It’s a cosy little shop that sells coffee to brew at home, wine, books, and other little treats. The atmosphere is always welcoming as they offer outdoor seating amongst the Jesmond houses, as well as the staff always being friendly; it’s another nice way to feel community (and drink some really good coffee).

Now that autumn is here, the orange leaves falling make it so pretty. The landscape transforms with warm colours, and the crunch of leaves underfoot adds to the experience. Even when it’s cold, the dene feels all the more beautiful. Being outdoors in the fresh air and natural light can improve my energy levels and enhance my sense of well-being. Whether I’m running, walking, or just sitting and admiring the view, Jesmond Dene will always be my favourite third place. It’s a local escape where I can be with nature, be more mindful and reflective with the help of the peaceful surroundings, but also get outdoors and breathe in the fresh air.
